Benefits
Energy and alertness
Caffeine is a very widely used stimulant, and most people notice more alertness and less tiredness after a normal dose. Note that the one study cited on this page measured running endurance, not alertness, and it used ordinary caffeine rather than the NewCaff coating.
Exercise performance
A 2022 review that pooled results from multiple trials found caffeine improved endurance running performance and time to exhaustion compared with placebo. Those trials used ordinary caffeine. NewCaff itself has not been tested in any published trial, so this is evidence for the caffeine in the product, not for the microencapsulated form.
Focus
Caffeine can improve attention and reaction time, particularly when you are short on sleep. No study cited on this page measured attention or reaction time, and none tested NewCaff.
Mechanism of action
Adenosine blockade
Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors in the brain, reducing the feeling of fatigue and increasing alertness.
Catecholamine release
Caffeine promotes release of adrenaline, supporting energy availability and exercise output.
Clinical trials
Systematic review and meta-analysis pooling previously published trials of caffeine intake and endurance running performance. (Wang et al. 2022, Nutrients). This is a review of other people's studies, not a new trial, and the trials it pooled used ordinary caffeine, not NewCaff.
Adults pooled from multiple separate caffeine trials. No participant in any of these studies took NewCaff.
Caffeine improved endurance running performance and time to exhaustion compared with placebo. The review says nothing about microencapsulated caffeine, taste masking, tolerability, or how quickly a coated caffeine releases.
