Skin condition
In one randomized, double blind, placebo controlled trial in 65 healthy women aged 20 to 39, taking 300 or 600 mg of apple polyphenols a day for 12 weeks significantly reduced UV induced skin pigmentation (erythema, melanin and L values) compared with placebo. Skin water content and water loss through the skin did not differ from placebo, and the higher dose was no better than the lower one. The trial tested generic apple polyphenols rather than this branded extract and was funded by Asahi Breweries, with two of the authors employed by the sponsor.
Antioxidant defense
Apple procyanidins act as antioxidants in laboratory testing. The one human trial cited on this page did not measure antioxidant activity or tissue protection in people, so this remains a laboratory finding rather than a demonstrated effect in the body.
Limits of the evidence
The only human evidence for this ingredient is the single UV exposure trial described above. Broader claims about skin resilience or overall appearance have not been tested, and that trial found no improvement in skin hydration or in the skin's moisture barrier.
Mechanism of action
Procyanidin antioxidants
In laboratory studies apple procyanidins neutralize free radicals. This is a proposed explanation for the reduced UV related pigmentation seen in the one human trial, not something that trial measured directly.
Hydration and skin barrier: not supported
Skin hydration and the skin's moisture barrier were measured in the one trial and did not improve. Water content and water loss through the skin were no different from placebo, so hydration and barrier claims are not supported for this ingredient.
