Prodiet® Colostrum is a microfiltered bovine colostrum from Ingredia, standardized for a high level of immunoglobulins (IgG). Colostrum is the first milk produced after birth, packed with antibodies and growth factors. Ingredia offers it at two IgG levels, 40% and 50%. The human trials cited here used generic bovine colostrum, not Prodiet itself, and Ingredia's own support for its immunity positioning is in vitro laboratory work.

Studied Dose The cited trials used 20 g of colostrum powder a day for 14 days for gut permeability, 25 g a day for 10 weeks in swimmers, and a low dose of 3.2 g a day for 6 weeks in soccer players. Ingredia suggests a minimum of 0.2 g of IgG a day, which at its 40% to 50% IgG grades is about 0.4 to 0.5 g of powder, far below the amounts used in those trials.
Active Compound Bovine colostrum microfiltered to 40% or 50% immunoglobulin G (IgG), with proline-rich polypeptides and growth factors.

Benefits

Immune support

Colostrum is rich in IgG antibodies and immune proteins. The one immune trial cited here, in swimmers taking 25 g a day for 10 weeks, measured antibody levels in saliva and blood and found no change, and the difference in reported upper respiratory symptoms did not reach statistical significance.

Gut health

In a crossover trial in 8 healthy volunteers, 20 g of colostrum a day for 14 days cut the rise in gut permeability caused by hard exercise by about 70%, on its own as well as alongside zinc carnosine. The trial was very small, and what was measured was permeability, not the lining itself.

Recovery support

In 18 soccer players, 3.2 g a day for 6 weeks, compared with the same amount of whey protein, jump performance dropped less after a hard shuttle-running test and markers of inflammation settled faster. Performance was maintained rather than improved, and the study was small.

Mechanism of action

1

Passive immune support

Colostrum delivers preformed IgG antibodies and immune-active proteins. Swallowed antibodies are proteins and are largely broken down by digestion, so any action is local in the gut rather than systemic. There is no evidence that they reach the airways intact.

2

Growth factors and the gut lining

Colostrum's growth factors support the renewal and integrity of the intestinal lining, which is thought to reinforce the gut barrier. This explanation comes from laboratory and animal work; in people, only gut permeability has been measured.

Side effects and drug interactions

Common Potential side effects

Generally well tolerated. It is dairy-derived and can contain lactose, so people who are lactose intolerant may notice gas or loose stools.
Mild digestive upset is occasionally reported.
Avoid if you have a milk-protein allergy.

Important Drug interactions

No major drug interactions are established for this ingredient.
Tell your doctor about all supplements if you take prescription medication.
Use caution if pregnant, breastfeeding, or managing a health condition.

What is the recommended dosage of Prodiet Colostrum?

The clinically studied dose is The cited trials used 20 g of colostrum powder a day for 14 days for gut permeability, 25 g a day for 10 weeks in swimmers, and a low dose of 3.2 g a day for 6 weeks in soccer players. Ingredia suggests a minimum of 0. Always follow the product label and check with a healthcare provider for personal advice.

Is Prodiet Colostrum safe, and does it have side effects?

For most healthy adults, Prodiet Colostrum is well tolerated at studied doses. Reported effects can include: Generally well tolerated. It is dairy-derived and can contain lactose, so people who are lactose intolerant may notice gas or loose stools. Mild digestive upset is occasionally reported. It may also interact with some medications. Prodiet Colostrum is not right for everyone, so check with a healthcare provider first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a medical condition, or take prescription medication.

How strong is the scientific evidence for Prodiet Colostrum?

NutraSmarts rates the evidence for Prodiet Colostrum as Limited (2 out of 5). It is backed by 3 cited references summarized on this page. A higher rating reflects more, larger, and better-designed human studies.

International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism. 2010;20(3):224-35. doi:10.1123/ijsnem.20.3.224.PubMedUsed to support: Double-blind randomized trial: 25 elite swimmers and 28 non-exercising students took 25 g a day of bovine colostrum or an isocaloric placebo for 10 weeks. There was no significant effect on immunoglobulin levels in saliva or blood in either group. Fewer swimmers on colostrum reported upper respiratory symptoms at 4 weeks, 25% versus 61%, but that difference did not reach statistical significance, p = 0.062. This is a null result on the immune measures, so it does not support an immune claim. It also did not test Prodiet.

Hard exercise raised gut permeability threefold on placebo. Colostrum on its own, and zinc carnosine on its own, each cut that rise by about 70% at 14 days; the combination acted faster, by day 2. Colostrum alone was effective here, but the trial had only 8 people and did not test Prodiet.

European Journal of Nutrition. 2018;57(3):1181-1195. doi:10.1007/s00394-017-1401-7.PubMedUsed to support: Double-blind trial in 18 soccer players given 3.2 g a day of bovine colostrum (n = 10) or the same amount of whey protein (n = 8) for 6 weeks; the comparator was whey protein, not an inert placebo. After a shuttle-running test, squat jump performance fell less in the colostrum group, p = 0.034, and IL-6 and CRP settled faster. Performance was maintained rather than improved. The study was small, was partly funded by a colostrum supplier, and did not test Prodiet.
