Studied in people with reflux symptoms
In one double-blind placebo-controlled trial, 118 adults with moderate gastroesophageal reflux took 6 grams a day and reported lower reflux symptom scores than placebo (about 57 percent improvement on a reflux quality-of-life questionnaire and about 59 percent on a reflux symptom scale). One important caveat: the product tested also contained sodium alginate and bicarbonate, which work against reflux on their own, so the improvement cannot be credited to the prickly pear and olive extracts. The trial has not been repeated, and it was run in people with a diagnosed reflux condition rather than in healthy users.
Proposed mucosal coating
The prickly pear polysaccharides are thought to form a sticky, protective layer over the lining of the esophagus and stomach. This is a proposed mechanism from laboratory work, not something measured in people, and the single study cited on this page did not test it.
Olive leaf antioxidants
Olive leaf biophenols show antioxidant activity in laboratory tests. No study cited here measured a separate effect of the olive leaf portion in people, so its contribution to the blend is unknown.
Mechanism of action
Mucoadhesive film
Opuntia polysaccharides are proposed to cling to and coat mucous membranes, which may shield them from acid and irritation. This has not been confirmed in the human study cited on this page.
Antioxidant soothing action
Olive biophenols have antioxidant activity in the laboratory. Whether that changes oxidative or inflammatory activity in the human digestive lining has not been shown in the research cited here.
Clinical trials
Double-blind randomized placebo-controlled study of a sodium alginate and bicarbonate formulation containing prickly pear and olive leaf extracts, given at 6 grams a day to people with gastroesophageal reflux.
