AMPK activation and fat oxidation
Metabolaid® is proposed to act on AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), an enzyme involved in how cells switch between glucose and fat as fuel. AMPK activation and increased fat oxidation were demonstrated in a high-fat-diet mouse model (Lee 2018, PMID 30200432) — animal data. No cited human trial measured fat oxidation or respiratory exchange ratio; the human trials measured appetite, body weight and body-fat outcomes.
Body weight and fat mass reduction
One of the cited 12-week randomized trials in overweight adults reported that Metabolaid® (500 mg/day) combined with exercise produced significantly greater reductions in body weight (-2.7 kg vs -0.7 kg placebo), body fat percentage, and BMI compared to exercise alone. This was a manufacturer-funded (Monteloeder) trial in which both groups exercised; the finding comes from a single research group and has not been independently replicated.
Blood pressure and cardiovascular health
Blood-pressure findings for hibiscus come from trials of hibiscus as a stand-alone herb, not from the Metabolaid® combination; no blood-pressure meta-analysis is cited among this page's references and the specific millimetre-of-mercury figures often quoted for hibiscus are not sourced here, while effects of lemon verbena verbascoside on arterial stiffness and inflammatory markers are preclinical. One cited RCT (Herranz-López 2019, PMID 30816148) reported blood-pressure and lipid markers among several outcomes in overweight/obese subjects; no synergistic cardiovascular benefit has been demonstrated for the combination.
Appetite regulation and satiety
Metabolaid® supplementation reduced self-reported appetite scores and shifted satiety-hormone markers (including GLP-1) in a manufacturer-funded RCT in overweight adults (Boix-Castejón 2018, PMID 29862395). An 8-week crossover RCT (Serna 2022, PMID 34591168) similarly reported reduced appetite sensation and lower energy intake. Central (hypothalamic) appetite regulation via AMPK is a proposed mechanism from laboratory work, not an outcome measured in these trials.
Mechanism of action
Dual AMPK activation via complementary pathways
Hibiscus anthocyanins are proposed to activate AMPK via the LKB1 pathway, while lemon verbena verbascoside activates AMPK through the CaMKKβ calcium-dependent pathway. Greater AMPK activation with the combination than with either extract alone has been shown in laboratory and animal models (Lee 2018, PMID 30200432). No human muscle-biopsy study of Metabolaid® is cited on this page, and the previously stated 3.5x phosphorylation figure is not traceable to any reference here.
Mitochondrial biogenesis via PGC-1α
AMPK activation phosphorylates and activates PGC-1α — the master regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis. Increased mitochondrial density enhances fat oxidation capacity, and aerobic energy production. This pathway is described from cell and animal research; mitochondrial biogenesis was not measured in the cited human trials, and no endurance outcome has been tested with this ingredient in people.
ACE inhibition and blood pressure reduction
In laboratory research, hibiscus anthocyanins can inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) in vitro. Whether this occurs to any meaningful degree in people taking Metabolaid® has not been shown. Combined with lemon verbena's anti-inflammatory effects on vascular endothelium, this is a proposed dual mechanism drawn from preclinical hibiscus research. Cardiovascular protection has not been demonstrated for Metabolaid® in the cited human trials, and this ingredient is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

In mice, Metabolaid® activated AMPK and reduced high-fat-diet-induced fat accumulation, which is consistent with the proposed mechanism. Animal data only — it does not establish the same effect in humans, and the 3.5x human muscle-biopsy figure previously stated here is not supported by any cited reference.
