Immune support
Two small human studies used generic spirulina, not Spirumune. One was a pilot study in adult women with HIV in Cameroon who were not taking antiretroviral treatment, where spirulina capsules were linked to higher CD4 T-cell counts and better antioxidant capacity. The other looked at immune measures in older adults. Neither shows that spirulina prevents infection or helps a healthy person fight off illness, and neither is a reason to delay or replace prescribed medical treatment.
Antioxidant defense
In the pilot study of women with HIV, spirulina was linked to improved antioxidant capacity measured in blood. That is a laboratory measurement in a small patient group, not proof of a health outcome, and no study of Spirumune itself has been published.
Nutrient density
Spirulina is a blue-green algae that supplies protein along with plant pigments such as carotenoids and chlorophyll. Neither cited study was designed to test general nutrition, so treat this as a description of what spirulina contains rather than a tested benefit.
Mechanism of action
Phycocyanin immunomodulation
Phycocyanin is the blue pigment in spirulina and is the compound most often proposed to explain effects on immune cells. Neither of the two cited human studies measured phycocyanin or tested it on its own, so this is a proposed explanation rather than a demonstrated one.
Antioxidant action
Spirulina's pigments show antioxidant activity in laboratory tests. The only human study here that measured antioxidant capacity was a small pilot in women with HIV, so how much this matters for a healthy person is unknown.
