Maritech® is the range of fucoidan extracts made by Marinova Pty Ltd in Tasmania, Australia, by a water-based process from wild brown seaweeds, mainly wakame (Undaria pinnatifida) and bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus). Maritech 926 is an Undaria sporophyll extract sold standardized to 85% fucoidan, and Maritech Synergy is a Fucus extract that also carries seaweed polyphenols. Most human trials of Maritech extracts were funded by Marinova. In one placebo-controlled trial in men, 1 g a day lowered a urinary symptom score more than placebo, while urine flow and PSA did not differ. In 20 adults doing resistance training, body fat percentage fell more than on placebo while body weight held steady. Placebo-controlled trials found no effect on joint comfort, insulin resistance, after-meal blood sugar or strength, and immune marker changes were small. The flu vaccine trial often cited for fucoidan used a different maker's product.

Studied Dose 1 g/day (often two 500 mg capsules) for 1 to 13 weeks in most trials; 300 mg/day of a Fucus extract for 12 weeks in a joint trial; single doses of 500 mg and 2 g of Maritech Synergy; 100 mg or 1 g/day of a three-seaweed Maritech blend with added nutrients.
Active Compound Fucoidan, a fucose-rich sulfated polysaccharide, extracted with water from wild brown seaweed. FDA-notified specifications for the Fucus vesiculosus extract require at least 70% fucoidan, with the rest alginate, polyphloroglucinol (seaweed polyphenols), mannitol and other carbohydrates; trial batches were reported at 67% to 88.9% fucoidan.

Benefits

Prostate health and urinary symptom scores in men

In a 90-day placebo-controlled trial in 95 men aged 45 to 80 with moderate prostate enlargement, 1 g a day of a Marinova Undaria extract (85.5% fucoidan) lowered a urinary symptom score by 3.40 points versus 0.93 on placebo. Urine flow, leftover urine and PSA did not differ. Marinova funded the trial, and two authors worked for it. Urinary symptoms need a medical check first.

Joint comfort and stiffness

In an open-label pilot in 12 adults with knee osteoarthritis, a three-seaweed Maritech blend with vitamin B6, zinc and manganese lowered a symptom score more at 1,000 mg than at 100 mg a day, with no placebo group. In a later placebo-controlled trial in 122 adults, 300 mg a day of a Marinova Fucus extract for 12 weeks did no better than placebo.

Blood sugar and insulin markers

In a placebo-controlled trial in 72 adults with obesity, 500 mg twice daily of Maritech Synergy for 90 days did not change insulin resistance, HbA1c, lipids, weight or blood pressure. In a crossover trial in 38 healthy adults, single 500 mg or 2 g doses taken before white bread did not lower the blood sugar or insulin rise compared with placebo.

Immune and inflammatory markers in active adults

In placebo-controlled crossover trials, 1 g a day of Marinova fucoidan left most blood immune markers unchanged after sprint exercise, while interleukin-6 and interleukin-10 were higher 30 minutes after exercise. In 12 men in hard training, salivary IgA rose more after exercise on fucoidan. Uncontrolled studies reported shifts in immune cells and fecal lysozyme. All are lab markers, not infections.

Strength and power during resistance training

In 20 adults doing 6 weeks of resistance training, 1 g a day of a Marinova Undaria and Fucus blend gave the same squat strength gain as placebo. Peak power rose only within the fucoidan group, with no significant group difference. In a sprint exercise trial and a 3-week training trial, performance did not differ from placebo.

Body fat percentage during resistance training

In 20 adults doing 6 weeks of resistance training, body fat percentage fell more with 1 g a day of a Marinova Undaria and Fucus blend than with placebo (interaction p = 0.03), while total body mass and lean mass did not differ between groups. In 72 adults with obesity, 1 g a day of Maritech Synergy for 90 days did not change weight or waist size.

Mechanism of action

1

Water extraction keeps fucoidan with seaweed polyphenols

Marinova suspends dried, milled seaweed in slightly acidic water, filters out solids and salts, and dries the filtrate. The resulting extracts carry fucoidan together with alginate, mannitol and seaweed polyphenols. Composition differs by species and grade, which is why results from one Maritech extract do not automatically apply to another.

2

Little is absorbed from the gut

Fucoidan is a large polysaccharide. In its FDA notice, Marinova described a human study showing that less than 1% of swallowed fucoidan reaches the blood, and an oral clotting pilot found effects far weaker than in the test tube. Any effects may therefore begin mostly in the gut.

3

Immune cell signaling (lab and animal work)

In cell and animal studies, fucoidan alters cytokine release and the activity of macrophages, natural killer cells and other immune cells. These are proposed explanations for the small immune marker changes in people, not mechanisms confirmed in human trials of Maritech extracts.

12 healthy, recreationally active men.

Training gains in mean power did not differ between supplements. Fecal and resting salivary markers were largely stable; the salivary IgA response to acute exercise was greater on fucoidan (p = 0.02), and other between-group differences were small.

7
Marinova Fucoidan Blend With Resistance Training: 6-Week RCT
PubMed

Double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel trial of 1 g/day of a Marinova Undaria pinnatifida and Fucus vesiculosus blend (81.5% fucoidan, 11.2% polyphenols) versus microcrystalline cellulose during supervised resistance training; supported by Marinova (Cousins et al. 2025, Sci Rep).

20 apparently healthy adults (9 men, 11 women), 10 per group.

Squat strength rose in both groups with no treatment effect (p = 0.48). Peak power rose only within the fucoidan group; the group by training interaction was not significant (p = 0.08). Body fat percentage showed a significant interaction (p = 0.03) favoring fucoidan, while lean mass and total mass did not differ.

8
Three-Seaweed Maritech Blend and Knee Joint Symptoms: Open-Label Pilot
PubMed

Open-label combined phase I and II pilot of a Maritech blend (Fucus vesiculosus 85%, Macrocystis pyrifera 10%, Laminaria japonica 5%) plus vitamin B6, zinc and manganese at 100 mg or 1,000 mg/day for 12 weeks; sponsored by Marinova, whose employee J. H. Fitton co-authored it (Myers et al. 2010, Biologics).

12 adults with knee osteoarthritis as the study population (5 on 100 mg, 7 on 1,000 mg).

The average arthritis symptom score fell 18% on 100 mg and 52% on 1,000 mg, a dose-related change with no placebo group. A later placebo-controlled trial of a Marinova Fucus extract at 300 mg/day found no benefit.

Side effects and drug interactions

Common Potential side effects

Generally well tolerated in Maritech trials of 300 mg to 2 g a day for up to 13 weeks. In the 90-day trial in men, adverse events were 12 on fucoidan and 10 on placebo, and investigators judged two cases of groin itching on fucoidan probably or possibly related.
Bleeding: fucoidan is a strong anticoagulant in the test tube, and 3 g a day of a 75% fucoidan lengthened one clotting time in a small 12-day study. Stop before surgery and ask a clinician if you bleed easily.
Iodine: seaweed-based supplements have been measured at 5 to 5,600 micrograms of iodine per daily dose, and the FDA letter on Marinova's Fucus extract lists no iodine limit among its specifications. People with thyroid conditions should ask the brand for an iodine test result.
Arsenic and other metals: Marinova's notified specifications cap inorganic arsenic at 1 mg/kg, total arsenic at 10 mg/kg, cadmium at 3 mg/kg, and lead and mercury at 1 mg/kg of extract. Finished products should still carry third-party testing.
Long-term safety beyond about 3 months, and safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding, have not been established.

Important Drug interactions

Anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs (warfarin, DOACs, heparin, clopidogrel, aspirin): possible added bleeding risk; ask your prescriber.
Thyroid medicines (levothyroxine, methimazole, propylthiouracil): iodine in seaweed-derived products can disturb thyroid control.
Letrozole and tamoxifen: in 20 patients, 1 g a day of Maritech Undaria extract for 3 weeks did not change trough blood levels of either drug. Still check with your oncologist before combining fucoidan with any cancer treatment.
Diabetes medicines: Maritech trials found no effect on insulin resistance or after-meal blood sugar, but monitor glucose when starting or stopping any supplement.

Frequently asked questions about Maritech® Fucoidan (Brown Seaweed Extract)

What is Maritech fucoidan?

Maritech® is Marinova's brand of fucoidan extracts, made in Tasmania by a water-based process from wild brown seaweed. Maritech 926 is an Undaria (wakame) sporophyll extract labeled at 85% fucoidan, and Maritech Synergy is a Fucus (bladderwrack) extract that keeps seaweed polyphenols. They are ingredients used in other brands' supplements.

Has Maritech fucoidan been tested for flu vaccine response?

Not in a published trial we found. The often-cited trial in which 300 mg a day raised flu vaccine antibody levels in older adults used Riken Mekabu Fucoidan from a Japanese maker, not Maritech. Maritech trials measured immune markers in active adults, with small and inconsistent changes.

What does the urinary symptom research on Maritech show?

One Marinova-funded, placebo-controlled trial in men with moderate prostate enlargement found a larger drop in urinary symptom scores with 1 g a day of its Undaria extract, but urine flow and PSA did not change. It has not been repeated. See a doctor about urinary symptoms and do not replace prescribed treatment.

Does Maritech fucoidan contain iodine or heavy metals?

Marinova's FDA-notified specifications cap arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury, but the FDA letter lists no iodine limit. Seaweed supplements in one market survey supplied up to 5,600 micrograms of iodine per daily dose. If you have a thyroid condition, ask the brand for a recent iodine and metals test.

What is Maritech Fucoidan used for?

Maritech Fucoidan is researched primarily for Prostate Health and Weight Management.

What is the recommended dosage of Maritech Fucoidan?
