Benefits
Digestive support
Digestive enzymes help break down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, supporting more complete and comfortable digestion. This is the established biochemical role of protease, lipase, and amylase, not a measured outcome for this product. Neither study cited on this page tested Bio-Zyme, and people with normal digestion already produce these enzymes.
Comfort after meals
Supplemental enzymes may ease the bloating and heaviness some people feel after large or rich meals. The closest evidence is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in 2023 in which a multi-enzyme supplement improved bloating and digestive discomfort in adults with functional dyspepsia, a condition diagnosed by a doctor. That trial used a different product in a diagnosed patient group, so it is not a claim that this supplement treats dyspepsia or any other condition.
Limited-evidence note
Digestive enzymes have a clear mechanistic role, but dedicated published clinical trials for this specific blend are limited. This page carries only two references and neither tested this blend. The second is a 1999 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study in 37 patients with pancreatic exocrine insufficiency after total or partial removal of the pancreas, and the treatment was pancreatin, a prescription pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy given under medical supervision. High-dose and standard-dose pancreatin were statistically similar in that trial. A result in post-surgical patients on prescription therapy is not evidence for what an over-the-counter enzyme supplement does for ordinary digestion.
Mechanism of action
Macronutrient breakdown
Protease breaks down protein, lipase breaks down fat, and amylase breaks down starch, easing the digestive workload.
Systemic enzyme activity
Taken between meals, proteolytic enzymes such as bromelain have been investigated for effects beyond digestion, including on inflammation. Neither of the two references on this page studied bromelain or that question, so this statement is uncited here and should be read as general background rather than as evidence for this product.
