AstaReal® is a natural astaxanthin, the red xanthophyll carotenoid produced by the freshwater microalga Haematococcus pluvialis. AstaReal is one of the original and most-studied astaxanthin brands, grown in closed cultivation systems for purity. Astaxanthin is among the most potent lipid-soluble antioxidants known, and AstaReal material has been used in clinical research on skin, eye, and exercise-recovery outcomes.

Benefits

Skin elasticity and moisture

In a small 6-week randomized placebo-controlled trial in 36 men, 6 mg/day of oral astaxanthin improved crow's feet wrinkles and elasticity and reduced transepidermal water loss; skin moisture showed only a non-significant trend. A separate open-label arm in 30 women combined oral supplementation with topical astaxanthin, so its moisture and texture gains cannot be credited to oral intake alone. Both arms were run by the manufacturer.

Antioxidant defense

Astaxanthin quenches singlet oxygen and free radicals far more effectively than many common antioxidants, protecting cell membranes throughout the body.
