Skin health
In a meta-analysis of nine small oral trials, astaxanthin significantly improved skin moisture and elasticity versus placebo, but it did NOT significantly reduce wrinkle depth. Results varied widely between studies.
Antioxidant activity, mostly lab-based
Astaxanthin is a strong antioxidant in laboratory tests. In human trials, blood oxidative markers such as malondialdehyde have not changed consistently, so this is a mechanism rather than a proven clinical benefit.
Eye comfort
Small, mostly industry-funded trials report modest improvements in digital eye strain and visual fatigue. Trials for exercise recovery have generally been null, so that use is not established.
Mechanism of action
Singlet-oxygen quenching
Astaxanthin's unique structure lets it span cell membranes and quench singlet oxygen and free radicals far more effectively than many antioxidants.
Anti-inflammatory action
By lowering oxidative stress, astaxanthin calms inflammatory signaling in skin, muscle, and other tissues.

Pooling nine small oral randomized trials, astaxanthin significantly improved skin moisture (SMD 0.53) and elasticity (SMD 0.77) versus placebo, but the reduction in wrinkle depth was not statistically significant. Heterogeneity between trials was high.
