Calm without drowsiness
In the one cited AlphaWave trial (n=30, 400 mg per day, 28 days), Perceived Stress Scale scores fell 17.98% versus placebo (p=0.04) without sedation. L-theanine's reputation for relaxed alertness and daytime calm rests largely on the wider generic L-theanine literature rather than on brand-specific data.
Focus and attention
In the single 28-day AlphaWave trial, Stroop test reaction time improved 21.33% versus placebo (p=0.005) in 30 healthy adults with moderate stress. The familiar explanations for this — increased alpha brain-wave activity and pairing with caffeine for smoother energy — come from the broader generic L-theanine research literature, not from this brand-specific trial, which measured neither EEG activity nor caffeine combinations.
Sleep — limited and indirect evidence
In the 28-day AlphaWave trial, participants spent less time in light sleep versus placebo. That single finding, from one small supplier-funded study of 30 people, is not the same as demonstrating more restful sleep overall; L-theanine is not sedating, so it does not produce the grogginess associated with sedatives.
Mechanism of action
Alpha brain-wave activity
EEG studies of generic L-theanine report increases in alpha waves, which are associated with a relaxed yet alert mental state; this class-level observation is the basis for its calm-focus reputation and was not tested in the AlphaWave trial.
Neurotransmitter balance
Preclinical and mechanistic research suggests L-theanine modulates GABA, serotonin, and dopamine signaling and tempers excitatory glutamate activity. These are proposed mechanisms; they were not measured in the human trial cited on this page.
