Benefits
Iron Deficiency Replacement
Iron is essential for hemoglobin synthesis, oxygen transport, energy metabolism. AB-Fortis provides bioavailable iron for deficiency replacement.
Improved Palatability
Encapsulation eliminates metallic taste of standard iron supplements — major improvement; particularly relevant for prenatal vitamins, multivitamins, pediatric formulations.
Food Fortification Without Sensory Changes
Suitable for fortifying foods (cereals, baked goods, beverages) without changing appearance, taste, or color.
Reduced Oxidation
Encapsulation reduces iron oxidation in food matrices and during digestion.
Reduced GI Side Effects
May reduce iron-related GI side effects (constipation, nausea) common with standard iron.
Mechanism of action
Iron Hemoglobin Function
Iron is essential cofactor in hemoglobin and myoglobin; deficiency causes microcytic anemia.
Iron Energy Metabolism
Iron is cofactor for cytochromes in mitochondrial electron transport — relevant to energy production.
Microencapsulation
Protects iron through GI tract; releases at appropriate location for absorption; reduces interaction with food matrix.
Clinical trials
Frutarom clinical evaluation of AB-Fortis bioavailability and efficacy.
Adults including iron-deficient populations.
Bioavailability suitable for iron deficiency replacement; improved palatability vs unencapsulated iron.
About this ingredient
AB-FORTIS® is a MICROENCAPSULATED FORM OF IRON developed by FRUTAROM HEALTH (now IFF). IRON DEFICIENCY BACKGROUND: most common nutrient deficiency globally; affects up to 25% of world population; particularly common in: menstruating women, pregnant women, vegetarians/vegans, adolescent girls, blood donors.
KEY DISTINCTIONS: (1) MICROENCAPSULATION technology; (2) NEUTRAL TASTE (eliminates metallic taste); (3) STABLE in food matrices; (4) Reduced GI side effects.
EVIDENCE-BASED USES: (1) Iron deficiency replacement; (2) Food fortification; (3) Improved palatability supplementation; (4) Energy and oxygen transport support.
CRITICAL CAUTIONS: (1) IRON DEFICIENCY DIAGNOSIS — NEVER supplement iron without confirmed need (serum ferritin <30 ng/mL or formal diagnosis); HEMOCHROMATOSIS (genetic iron overload, 1 in 200) can be worsened by iron supplementation; (2) HEMOCHROMATOSIS — AVOID iron supplementation; (3) DRUG INTERACTIONS — separate from levothyroxine (4 hours), fluoroquinolones/tetracyclines (2 hours), calcium, zinc; (4) VITAMIN C ENHANCES ABSORPTION; (5) DOSE — typical 18 mg/day women, 8 mg/day men; therapeutic anemia doses higher under medical supervision; (6) PREGNANCY — iron needs higher; supplementation often recommended; consult prenatal care; (7) AB-FORTIS vs OTHER IRON FORMS — encapsulation distinguishes from generic iron sulfate (cheap, more side effects), iron bisglycinate (chelated, better tolerance); (8) BLACK STOOL — normal with iron supplementation; not melena (digested blood); (9) FOR FOOD FORTIFICATION — AB-Fortis suitable for breakfast cereals, baked goods, fortified beverages, infant formula; (10) BRAND VERIFICATION — AB-Fortis® is Frutarom/IFF trademark.
