Collagen sits in a strange spot on the shelf. The tub says 18 or 20 grams of protein, and then the Daily Value beside it says 0 percent. Half the internet tells you to count those grams toward your daily protein, and the other half tells you collagen does not count at all. Both camps are describing something real, and they are answering different questions.

Here is the honest version, with the label rule, the arithmetic, and the trials that compared collagen against actual protein.

The short answer

  • Yes, the grams count toward your daily total and your calories. Collagen is a real protein and your body digests it.
  • No, it is not a complete protein. It contains no tryptophan, and per 20 grams of protein only about 0.6 grams of leucine, against about 1.8 grams for whey.

The six meanings of “counts” that get mixed together in this argument.

Is collagen a complete protein? No, and here is exactly what is missing

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, accounting for about a third of all protein in animals, and it is built from an unusual amino acid mix: glycine, proline and hydroxyproline together make up about 57 percent of its amino acids. That composition is what makes collagen useful as connective tissue, and it is also what makes it a poor source of the amino acids you need from food.

The clearest way to see it is per gram of protein. These are USDA FoodData Central figures for gelatin, which is simply cooked collagen and has the same amino acid profile as the peptides in a collagen tub.

Two numbers do most of the work here. Collagen contains no tryptophan, one of the nine essential amino acids, which is why the standard protein quality score for collagen is zero. And its leucine, the amino acid that switches on muscle protein synthesis, is roughly a third of what the same amount of whey protein delivers.

Protein quality scores put numbers on this. Under the protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS), a protein missing any essential amino acid scores zero. Under the newer DIAAS system, an overview of 17 protein sources placed gelatin in the lowest category, alongside several plant proteins, while whey, soy, egg and casein ranked as high or excellent quality. That overview was written by employees of a potato protein manufacturer, whose own ingredient the same paper ranks in the excellent category, so it earns the same funding note the collagen trials get below. A pig study measuring digestibility directly found bovine collagen hydrolysate was 79 percent digestible, so the problem is not that collagen passes through you. The problem is which amino acids it carries.

Incomplete does not mean useless Your body absorbs collagen peptides perfectly well. Researchers can measure collagen-specific fragments such as Pro-Hyp in human blood within an hour or two of a dose, and collagen is the best dietary source of glycine there is: about 4.4 grams per 20 grams of protein, against about 0.4 grams from whey. Glycine is usually classed as non-essential, but analyses of human metabolism have argued that the amount we make plus the amount we eat may fall short of what collagen synthesis alone demands, which is why several reviews call it conditionally essential. That is a real argument for collagen as a supplement. It is not an argument for collagen as your protein.

Why your label says 18 g of protein and 0% Daily Value

This confuses more people than anything else about collagen, and the answer is written into federal labeling rules. Two different numbers on that panel are calculated two different ways.

The grams come from chemistry. Federal rules let manufacturers calculate protein content as the food's measured nitrogen content multiplied by 6.25. Collagen is nitrogen rich, so it produces a healthy gram count. (That 6.25 factor is a default that has been in use for decades; a 2008 review of nitrogen-to-protein conversion argued it is too high as a universal figure and proposed 5.6 instead.)

The percent Daily Value comes from quality. The same regulation says the percent Daily Value must be based on the corrected amount of protein, meaning the grams multiplied by the PDCAAS score, against a Daily Value of 50 grams. The supplement rule points at the same correction: a Supplement Facts panel lists a percent Daily Value for the ingredients it declares, and for protein that percentage has to be calculated from the corrected amount. Collagen's score is zero, so its corrected amount is zero, and the panel shows 0 percent. The “not a significant source of protein” phrasing comes from the conventional food rule instead: once the corrected value falls below 20 percent, a food label has to carry either that statement or the corrected amount next to the grams, which is why you see it on collagen sold as a food rather than as a supplement.

A label decoder you can use anywhere When a product lists both grams of protein and a protein percent Daily Value, you can back out the quality score it is claiming: halve the percent Daily Value to get the grams of corrected protein, then divide that by the grams on the panel: the Daily Value is 50 grams, so each 1 percent is half a gram. A whey or milk protein lands near 1.0, which is also the highest score the rule allows. A product with 20 grams of protein showing 10 percent is telling you its corrected protein is 5 grams, a score of 0.25, which means something in the blend is dragging quality down. Protein percent Daily Value is optional on ordinary foods unless the package makes a protein claim, so plenty of labels leave it blank.

How much of your daily protein can come from collagen?

The number you will see everywhere is about a third, and it comes from one 2019 paper. Researchers ran repeated protein quality calculations on the average American diet, swapping in collagen peptides for part of the protein until the mixture stopped meeting essential amino acid requirements. The answer was that collagen could supply up to about 36 percent of daily protein with the diet's amino acid balance intact. At that point the first limiting amino acids were methionine and cysteine, not tryptophan.

Two things about that figure deserve to be said out loud. First, it is a calculation, not a feeding trial, and it assumes the rest of your diet is the average American mix, which carries a surplus of essential amino acids (in that model, individual amino acid scores ran 31 to 67 percent above requirements). Eat less protein overall, or lean heavily on plant sources, and your headroom shrinks. Second, the paper was written by an independent researcher who consults for a supplement manufacturer, together with co-authors from the collagen producer GELITA and the Collagen Research Institute. That does not make it wrong; the arithmetic is reproducible. It does mean the number should travel with its context, which is rarely how you see it quoted.

Daily protein at the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines range of 1.2 to 1.6 g/kg, with the collagen ceiling set at one third of it. If you carry a lot of excess body fat, base the target on a healthy or goal weight.

For a 150 pound adult, that is roughly 82 to 109 grams of protein a day and a collagen ceiling around 27 to 36 grams, which is one or two scoops. Most people take 10 to 20 grams, so the typical dose sits comfortably under the ceiling. Worth knowing: you already eat collagen without supplementing. The same paper estimated that Americans get roughly 3 to 5 grams of collagen protein a day from meat and fish, and much more if they eat a lot of sausages and processed meats, where connective tissue makes up a large share of the protein.

Does collagen count as protein for muscle?

This is where the answer turns into a firm no, and it is the best-tested part of the question, because several groups have fed people collagen and fed matched people real protein.

In older women, 30 grams of whey or collagen twice a day for six days produced very different results: whey raised muscle protein synthesis both at rest and after resistance exercise, while collagen raised it only slightly after exercise and not at all at rest, and the longer-term measure did not rise above baseline with collagen at all. In older men, adding 50 grams a day of protein above the RDA raised integrated muscle protein synthesis with whey and with pea protein, but not with collagen. After resistance exercise in young adults, 30 grams of whey raised myofibrillar protein synthesis compared with a placebo while 30 grams of collagen did not, and a follow-up trial found collagen did not beat placebo even for muscle connective tissue protein synthesis, the outcome collagen was supposed to own.

The obvious counterargument is leucine, so someone tested it. A 10-week resistance training study gave one group 35 grams of whey and the other 35 grams of collagen with free leucine added to match, and whey still produced greater gains in muscle thickness (8.4 versus 5.6 percent in the quadriceps), though strength gains were similar. The amino acid gap is wide: in one trial of overweight women, the whey sachet supplied 25 grams of protein carrying 2.4 grams of leucine, while the collagen sachet supplied 26 grams of protein carrying about 1 gram.

What does work: pairing, not replacing Collagen coingested with whey keeps the glycine advantage without giving up the leucine. In one crossover study, adding 5 grams of collagen to 25 grams of whey was enough to stop the post-exercise dip in plasma glycine, and larger collagen swaps (10 to 15 grams) started to cut into leucine availability. In eight older men, a 20 gram blend of collagen hydrolysate with milk protein raised muscle protein synthesis as much as milk protein alone, though a trial that small can fail to find a difference without proving the two are equivalent, and one author has consulted for the company that makes the blend. Add collagen on top of your protein, do not trade one for the other.

Practically: count a collagen scoop toward your daily grams, but do not count it as one of your protein meals. The per-meal target for muscle is roughly 0.4 grams of protein per kilogram, the amount that maximized muscle protein synthesis in older men, about 30 grams for a 75 kilogram adult, from a protein that carries enough leucine. Collagen in your coffee is a supplement with breakfast, not breakfast.

But the collagen trials show more lean mass. What is going on?

They do, and this is the part most skeptical write-ups skip. A series of randomized trials, mostly using 15 grams a day of specific collagen peptides alongside resistance training, have reported greater gains in fat-free mass than placebo: in elderly men with sarcopenia (+4.2 kg versus +2.9 kg), in middle-aged untrained men, in recreationally active men, and in premenopausal women. A well-controlled 15-week study in young men found greater increases in quadriceps volume with collagen than placebo (15.2 versus 10.3 percent), with no difference in strength. A 2024 meta-analysis of 19 studies put the pooled effect on fat-free mass at a standardized mean difference of 0.48, rated moderate certainty, with a much smaller effect on maximal strength (0.19). A 2026 trial even found more type I collagen inside the muscle itself after 12 weeks of training with collagen peptides.

Here is how to square that with the muscle protein synthesis results. Almost all of those trials compared collagen against a placebo, not against protein. They answer “is 15 grams of collagen better than nothing while you train?” and not “is collagen as good as whey?”. When protein is the comparator, collagen loses or ties: in the middle-aged men's trial, the whey arm was not statistically different from either collagen or placebo, and in the head-to-head muscle protein synthesis work above, whey wins. A systematic review of 15 collagen trials concluded that collagen raised collagen synthesis but did not meaningfully move muscle protein synthesis when compared against isonitrogenous higher-quality proteins.

There is also a fat-free mass measurement wrinkle worth knowing: fat-free mass on a DXA or bioimpedance scan includes connective tissue, not just contractile muscle, so a supplement that thickens connective tissue can move that number without building more muscle fiber. The authors of one trial made exactly that point when their collagen group gained more fat-free mass than placebo while type II muscle fiber cross-sectional area rose by the same amount in both groups, which led them to attribute the difference to connective tissue rather than to contractile muscle.

Read the funding line on collagen studies Much of this literature comes from a small number of groups working with collagen producers, and it shows up in the results. In a 2025 meta-analysis of 23 skin trials, collagen supplements improved hydration, elasticity and wrinkles overall, but the trials with no industry funding showed no effect, and neither did the high-quality ones. That is not a reason to dismiss collagen research, but it is a reason to weight independent, placebo-controlled, protein-comparator trials most heavily. A 2026 network meta-analysis ranking collagen above whey for fat-free mass is a good example of why: it ranks collagen against whey indirectly, by anchoring both to placebo rather than to trials that fed people one or the other, so the ranking inherits whichever literature was friendlier.

Can you make collagen a complete protein?

On paper, yes, and products sold as “complete” collagen do exactly that by adding tryptophan and sometimes other essential amino acids. Add tryptophan and the score is no longer zero. There is even a feeding study behind the idea: nine healthy women around age 71 completed two 15 day trials on a controlled diet at roughly the RDA, taking a whey concentrate in one and a fortified collagen hydrolysate in the other, each supplying about half their protein, and the fortified collagen maintained nitrogen balance and lean mass (nitrogen excretion was actually higher on the whey trial).

The catch is that tryptophan is only collagen's most obvious gap. In the 2019 modeling paper, once tryptophan was accounted for, the next limiting amino acids were methionine and cysteine, which scored about 0.28 against the reference pattern, and leucine scored about 0.45. A fortified collagen is a better protein than plain collagen. It is still not the protein you would choose to build muscle around.

The cheaper version of the same fix is a mixed diet. Protein quality is a property of your day, not of a single scoop: eat collagen alongside eggs, dairy, meat, fish, soy or a complete protein powder, and the surplus of tryptophan and leucine in those foods covers collagen's deficit, which is exactly what the 36 percent model is describing.

Where collagen does earn its scoop

None of this makes collagen a waste of money. It makes it a targeted supplement rather than a protein source, and the targets it aims at have their own evidence, which we cover in detail in our review of the collagen peptide trials for skin and joints.

Collagen in protein bars, waters and creamers

This is where the accounting actually costs you something. A collagen scoop you add on purpose is easy to account for. Collagen inside a product that advertises a protein number is not, because it quietly lowers the quality of protein you thought you were buying.

A 2025 laboratory analysis of protein bars measured protein quality after simulated digestion and found the bar containing collagen scored in the single digits on the DIAAS scale, while the best bar, made with milk proteins only, reached 61. The same study found protein in bar form digested worse than the same proteins tested on their own, at 47 to 81 percent. Using collagen to help reach a protein number is legal, and it has to appear in the ingredient list, so this is a formulation choice to read for rather than a violation. In a different context, analytical labs have published amino acid fingerprinting methods that can detect gelatin added to milk powders, a reminder that it is the amino acid profile, not the total nitrogen number, that tells you what a protein claim is made of.

What to do: read the ingredient list rather than the front of the package. If collagen, gelatin or “hydrolyzed bovine protein” appears before or near the milk or soy protein, treat a chunk of that protein number as collagen, and use the percent Daily Value decoder above when the label prints one.

Does collagen count toward my daily protein intake?

Yes for the grams and the calories, with a limit. Collagen is a real protein and it is digested and absorbed, so a 20 gram scoop adds 20 grams to your daily total. What it cannot do is cover your essential amino acid needs, because it contains no tryptophan and very little leucine. A modeling study of the typical American diet found that up to about 36 percent of daily protein could come from collagen peptides while still meeting essential amino acid requirements. A practical rule is to let collagen be no more than about a third of your protein for the day and to get the rest from complete sources.

Why does my collagen powder say 0% Daily Value for protein?

None of this means the grams are fake.

Is collagen a complete protein?

No. A complete protein supplies all nine essential amino acids in useful amounts. Collagen supplies no tryptophan at all, and it is low in several others. Per 20 grams of protein, USDA figures put gelatin at about 0.6 grams of leucine, against about 1.8 grams for whey, and its essential amino acids make up only about 16 percent of the protein, against 43 percent for whey. Adding tryptophan raises the score above zero, but the next weakest link, the sulfur amino acids methionine and cysteine, still sits at less than a third of the reference pattern.

How much of my daily protein can come from collagen?

About a third is a sensible ceiling for most people. That figure traces to a 2019 modeling study that ran repeated protein quality calculations on the average American diet and found that collagen peptides could replace up to about 36 percent of daily protein while essential amino acid needs were still met. Note what the model assumed: an average intake with a surplus of essential amino acids in the rest of the diet, and the study was co-authored by researchers at a collagen manufacturer and a collagen research institute. If you eat a small amount of protein overall, the headroom shrinks, so complete protein comes first.

Does collagen in my coffee count as a protein meal?

Not for muscle. Can collagen replace whey or another protein powder?

Not if the goal is muscle. In a 10-week resistance training study, whey beat collagen for muscle thickness even when the collagen was matched for leucine with added free leucine. In older men, adding 50 grams a day of whey or pea protein above the RDA raised muscle protein synthesis, while collagen did not. Collagen and whey are answering different questions: one is aimed at connective tissue, the other at muscle. Many people use both, and a blend of collagen with milk protein matched milk protein alone for muscle protein synthesis in one trial of eight older men.

Can you make collagen a complete protein by adding tryptophan?

You can lift the score off zero, which matters on paper more than it does on your plate. A fortified collagen hydrolysate that supplied about half the daily protein maintained nitrogen balance over 15 days in nine older women eating close to the RDA, so a fortified product is not nutritionally empty. But collagen is low in more than tryptophan. Its leucine stays low, and on the reference pattern its methionine plus cysteine score is about 0.28, so a fortified product is still not a muscle-building protein. Pairing collagen with complete protein across the day does the same job without paying for the fortification.

Do gelatin, bone broth and collagen protein bars count the same way?

They follow the same rule, because they are the same protein in different forms. Gelatin is cooked collagen and collagen peptides are gelatin broken into smaller pieces, so all of them lack tryptophan. Bone broth is mostly water with a modest amount of that same protein. Bars are where it matters most: a bar can advertise 20 grams of protein while part of that protein is collagen, which lowers the quality of the total. In one laboratory analysis of protein bars, the bar containing collagen scored in the single digits on a protein quality scale. Read the ingredient list, not just the front of the wrapper.

The bottom line

Collagen counts as protein the way a bicycle counts as transport: it is genuinely one, and it is the wrong one for some trips. The grams are real, they feed into your daily total and your calories, and modeling puts the ceiling at about a third of your protein before the rest of your diet can no longer cover what collagen lacks. The 0 percent Daily Value on the tub is a quality rule, not a trick.

What collagen cannot do is stand in for a protein meal. With no tryptophan and about 0.6 grams of leucine per 20 grams, it did not raise muscle protein synthesis in the trials where whey and pea protein did.
