Antioxidant defense
The 'dual action' story is the reason the two ingredients were combined, not something anyone has tested as a blend. Studied separately in people: a randomized crossover trial of plain spirulina raised glutathione at rest and after exercise and lowered TBARS, a marker of exercise-related fat damage; and a placebo-controlled trial of Mirtoselect, a different company's bilberry extract, improved a blood antioxidant measure in people with dry eye. Neither trial used OxiCyan.
Cellular protection
No laboratory study of the OxiCyan complex is cited on this page. The cell-protection idea comes from two review articles that summarize laboratory work on bilberry anthocyanins and on spirulina pigments as separate ingredients.
Limited-evidence note
There are no human trials of OxiCyan itself. The four references on this page are two review articles, one trial of a competing branded bilberry extract in people with dry eye, and one trial of unbranded spirulina in exercising adults. Nothing cited here shows what this specific blend does in a person.
Mechanism of action
Neutralizing free radicals (laboratory evidence)
In laboratory work summarized by a 2022 bilberry review, anthocyanins neutralize reactive oxygen species, the unstable molecules behind oxidative stress. How much of this happens in the body at supplement doses, and whether it matters to how you feel, has not been established for this blend.
Switching on the cell's own antioxidant enzymes
Laboratory and animal studies summarized in a 2016 spirulina review suggest that phycocyanin and other spirulina pigments prompt cells to increase their own antioxidant enzymes, through a signalling route called Nrf2. This is cell and animal work, not evidence from people taking OxiCyan.
