Lutein and zeaxanthin concentrate in the macula of the eye, where they support macular pigment density and protect against blue-light and oxidative stress.
Visual performance
In randomized research in adults, lutein and zeaxanthin have improved visual performance measures such as glare tolerance and contrast sensitivity. The single trial cited on this page was in children and measured macular pigment density, eye strain and fatigue, and processing speed, not glare or contrast.
Antioxidant protection
As carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin absorb blue light and quench free radicals in the retina. No human trial cited here measured an antioxidant clinical outcome, and effects on skin were not tested.

Lutein and zeaxanthin build up in the macula, filtering harmful blue light and quenching free radicals to protect the retina.
Antioxidant action
The carotenoids scavenge free radicals generated by light exposure, supporting long-term eye health.
Clinical trials
Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of lutein and zeaxanthin gummies in 60 children aged 5 to 12. (Parekh et al. 2024, Advances in Therapy)
Healthy children aged 5 to 12 years (n=60).
In 60 children, lutein and zeaxanthin gummies (10 mg lutein, 2 mg zeaxanthin) raised macular pigment density and serum carotenoids and reduced eye strain and fatigue versus placebo over 180 days, with some cognitive and flicker-fusion measures also improving. The primary endpoint, macular pigment density, is a surrogate marker rather than a clinical vision outcome.
