Heat-killed KW3110 taken daily for 8 weeks was tested in small trials for eye fatigue brought on by prolonged screen (visual display terminal) use.

Eye comfort during screen use

The trials measured critical flicker frequency, a marker of eye fatigue. Effects were modest, and for the primary endpoint of one trial the benefit appeared only in a subgroup with high baseline fatigue.

How it is thought to work

62 healthy Japanese adults aged 35 to 45 with screen-related eye fatigue.

Critical flicker frequency, a marker of eye fatigue, tended to decline less in the KW3110 group; the difference reached significance only in a subgroup with high baseline eye fatigue at week 4. The manufacturer, Kirin, funded the study.
