Heart health: what the cited study did and did not show
The study cited on this page measured blood fats and hs-CRP (an inflammation marker) in 40 young adults over 8 weeks and found no significant effect on either. What it did show was a rise in the omega-3 index, a measure of how much EPA and DHA sits in red blood cell membranes. That is a blood marker, not a heart outcome. Research on marine omega-3s and heart health in general is a separate body of work and was not tested with this brand.
Brain and mood
DHA is one of the main structural fats in the brain, which is why omega-3s are studied for thinking and mood. However, no study cited on this page measured any memory, thinking or mood outcome, so there is nothing here showing that EPAX oil affects them.
Omega-3 status
This is the one thing the cited study actually showed. In 40 adults aged 18 to 30 who ate little fish and started with a low omega-3 index, 8 weeks of 700 mg EPA plus DHA per day raised the omega-3 index by about 2%, similar to eating oily fish. Keep in mind the omega-3 index is a blood marker rather than a health outcome on its own, and this was one small, short study.
Mechanism of action
Membrane incorporation
EPA and DHA get built into cell membranes, and the omega-3 index measures how much of them sits in red blood cell membranes. In the cited 8 week study, omega-3 fats in red blood cells went up and omega-6 fats went down. Laboratory work suggests these fats also serve as raw material for signaling molecules involved in inflammation.
Anti-inflammatory resolution
In laboratory research, omega-3s are converted into signaling molecules called specialized pro-resolving mediators that appear to help wind down inflammation. That is background biology rather than a proven effect here: the only study cited on this page measured hs-CRP, a common inflammation marker, and found no significant change after 8 weeks. Joint health was not studied at all.
Clinical trials
A small randomized trial in 40 adults over 8 weeks, comparing oily fish with a supplement providing 700 mg of EPA plus DHA per day. The EPAX brand was not tested or named in the study; one author disclosed receiving equipment and supplies from Epax Norway AS. (McMullan et al. 2025, Journal of Nutrition)

Both eating oily fish and taking the supplement raised the omega-3 index by about 2%, with omega-3 fats up and omega-6 fats down in red blood cells. There were no significant effects on blood lipids or hs-CRP. No memory, thinking or mood outcomes were measured. Because the study was small and lasted 8 weeks, it shows a change in a blood marker rather than a change in health.
