Bladder control
Pumpkin seed products have been looked at in women with bladder problems, but the research is weak. In 117 women with overactive bladder followed for 12 weeks, a pumpkin seed, sumac bark and hops combination was followed by fewer daytime trips in 77 of 99 women and fewer night-time trips in 70 of 100, with leakages falling from 0.9 to 0.4 a day. That study was observational with no comparison group, and it tested a three-plant blend rather than pumpkin seed alone, so the change cannot be credited to any single ingredient or to this product.
Urinary comfort
Pumpkin seed has a long history of traditional use for the bladder and urinary tract. In an open-label study of 45 people with overactive bladder, 10 g a day of pumpkin seed oil was followed by lower symptom scores at 6 and 12 weeks, but everyone took the product and there was no placebo group. That study also used a different pumpkin species, Cucurbita maxima, rather than the Cucurbita pepo in this product. Urinary symptoms come and go and respond strongly to attention and expectation, so uncontrolled before-and-after results are not evidence that the product did the work.
Limited-evidence note
There is no published clinical trial of DropsOrDry itself, and none of the cited studies included soy isoflavones or measured a single menopausal symptom. All three tested other pumpkin seed products, all three lacked a control or placebo group, and two of the three tested multi-plant formulas rather than pumpkin seed on its own. Mechanism of action
Bladder-muscle support
Pumpkin seed and isoflavone compounds have been proposed to influence bladder muscle tone. This is a suggested explanation only. None of the studies cited on this page measured bladder muscle function, and none of them tested this combination.
Phytoestrogen action
Soy genistein is a phytoestrogen, a plant compound with a weak estrogen-like structure. Whether it does anything for pelvic or urinary tissue in this product has not been tested. None of the three studies cited here contained soy isoflavones or looked at menopause-related changes.
