Benefits
Knee comfort
In a multicenter randomized controlled trial, UC-II® undenatured type II collagen (a different brand than B-2Cool®) improved knee osteoarthritis symptom scores versus placebo; this supports the ingredient class rather than B-2Cool® specifically.
Joint flexibility and mobility
Undenatured type II collagen (studied as the UC-II® brand, not B-2Cool® specifically) has been examined for joint flexibility and range of motion, including in active people without diagnosed arthritis, in a separate trial not cited here.
Low-dose convenience
A single small 40 mg daily dose works through an immune mechanism, far less than the grams needed for structural collagen.
Mechanism of action
Oral tolerance
Tiny amounts of intact type II collagen interact with immune tissue in the gut, and are thought to train regulatory immune cells to dampen inflammatory activity against joint cartilage — a proposed mechanism, not a proven one.
Reduced cartilage inflammation
By calming the inflammatory/immune component thought to contribute to joint wear, undenatured collagen is proposed to help preserve cartilage and ease discomfort.
Clinical trials
Multicenter randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of UC-II® undenatured type II collagen (a different brand than B-2Cool®) at 40 mg/day in knee osteoarthritis. (Lugo et al. 2016, Nutrition Journal)
Adults with knee osteoarthritis.
