Bone mineral density
One 7-year study followed 172 women who had already been buying and taking this plant-calcium program for 1 to 7 years. Their bone mineral density rose about 1.04% per year, roughly 7.3% over the full 7 years, compared with an expected age-related loss of about 0.4% per year. Important caveats: nobody was randomized, there was no placebo group, and the comparison was against a database of expected decline rather than against real people taking nothing. People who keep buying and taking a bone supplement for seven years also tend to differ from everyone else in diet, exercise and health habits. So this is an encouraging long-term dataset, not proof that the supplement raised bone density.
Mineral cofactors for bone
The AlgaeCal Plus formula supplies magnesium, boron, vitamin D3, and vitamin K2 alongside the calcium. Vitamin D3 and K2 have their own bone research behind them, but the study cited on this page did not separate the calcium from these added nutrients, so there is no way to tell which part of the formula, if any, was responsible for what was measured.

As a whole-algae, food-form mineral, it offers a plant-based alternative to rock-derived calcium carbonate for people who prefer that source.
Mechanism of action
Bioavailable plant calcium
Calcium is delivered in a porous, food-bound algal matrix alongside trace minerals. The idea that this form is absorbed better than ordinary calcium carbonate is a proposed explanation, not something the study on this page tested; that study measured bone density in existing users and did not compare absorption against another calcium source.
Vitamin K2 and D3 cofactors
Vitamin D3 helps the body absorb calcium, and vitamin K2 activates two proteins, osteocalcin and matrix Gla protein, that are involved in how the body handles calcium. This is laboratory biology. The study cited on this page did not measure osteocalcin, artery calcium, or any heart outcome, so nothing here should be read as an effect on arteries.
Clinical trials
A 7-year open-label, uncontrolled longitudinal study of the AlgaeCal plant-calcium plus vitamin and mineral program (Kaats et al. 2016, Journal of the American College of Nutrition). Participants were not randomized and there was no placebo group. Everyone enrolled was already a customer who had been taking the product for 1 to 7 years. The 5,070-person comparison was a reference database of expected age-related bone loss, not people taking a comparison product.
172 women who completed DEXA bone scans and who had already been using the supplement for 1 to 7 years before the analysis. This is a self-selected group of long-term buyers, which is a serious source of bias.

With no randomization, no placebo group, and participants who had already chosen to take the product for years, the change could also reflect their diet, exercise, other supplements, or the way the expected-decline estimate was built. Treat this as one uncontrolled dataset, not as proof the supplement builds bone.
