If you have ever felt bloated, tired, or off after eating and gone looking for answers, you have probably seen the ads: mail in a stool sample or a few drops of blood, and a company will reveal your "gut health score" or a personalized list of foods your body is secretly reacting to. It is a compelling promise, and a booming business. It is also, for most of these tests, not supported by the science. This guide walks through the main categories of at-home gut and food tests, explains what each one actually measures and where it falls down, and, most importantly, what to do instead when you genuinely want answers.

Most at-home gut and food sensitivity tests are not validated to do what they claim. Consumer gut microbiome tests are not clinically proven to guide your diet or supplements, IgG food sensitivity tests are advised against by allergy societies, cytotoxic and hair-based tests have no accepted scientific basis, and the blood zonulin "leaky gut" test does not reliably measure a leaky gut.

The reliable ways to find a food problem are old-fashioned and mostly free: a real allergy workup with an allergist, a structured elimination diet with a dietitian, and a proper medical evaluation for persistent symptoms. If a test result comes with a checkout cart for that same company's supplements, be extra skeptical.

The science is real, the tests are the problem

It is worth being clear up front, because skepticism about the tests is not skepticism about the underlying science. The gut microbiome genuinely matters, food intolerances are real, and the gut lining really can become more permeable in certain conditions. The problem is the leap from "this biology is real and important" to "so this mail-in kit can measure it in you and tell you what to eat." That leap is where the marketing gets ahead of the evidence. A test has to clear two bars to be useful: it has to measure what it claims accurately and reproducibly, and acting on the result has to actually improve your health. Most of these consumer tests fail the first bar, and almost none have cleared the second.

At-home gut microbiome tests

These are the stool-sample kits that sequence your gut bacteria and hand back a "gut health score," a list of good and bad microbes, and personalized food and supplement recommendations. The best-known include Viome, Thorne Gut Health, Ombre (formerly Thryve), ZOE, and BIOHM. They differ in method: Ombre uses basic 16S sequencing that identifies bacteria only roughly, Thorne and ZOE use more detailed shotgun sequencing, and Viome reads microbial RNA to estimate activity. The technology is real and improving.

The trouble is what happens after the sequencing. Three problems apply across the whole category:

None of this means the microbiome is fake or that these companies are frauds. It means a 150 to 350 dollar test cannot yet tell you which foods to eat or which supplement to buy with any real precision, and much of the sensible advice they give (eat more fiber, more plants, and fewer ultra-processed foods) is free and needs no test at all.

Food sensitivity (IgG) tests

This is the category to be most wary of, because it is the most popular and the most clearly contradicted by the evidence. Tests like Everlywell Food Sensitivity, myLAB Box, and YorkTest take a few drops of blood and measure IgG antibodies to dozens or hundreds of foods, then tell you the high-IgG foods are ones your body is "sensitive" to and should eliminate.

Here is the core problem: IgG antibodies to food are a normal, healthy response to eating. Producing IgG to a food is a sign that your immune system has seen it and, in many cases, learned to tolerate it. So a perfectly healthy person will test positive for many of the foods they eat most, which is exactly backwards from what the test implies. This is not a fringe opinion. Major allergy bodies, including the European and American allergy academies, have formally stated that testing for IgG or IgG4 against foods is not recommended as a diagnostic tool, because the results do not identify a food allergy, sensitivity, or intolerance.

The harm is not just a wasted 150 dollars. People take these near-guaranteed "positive" lists and cut out large numbers of everyday foods, which can lead to an unnecessarily restricted diet, real anxiety around eating, disordered-eating patterns, and, in children, nutritional gaps, all while whatever is truly causing the symptoms goes unexamined. The test also cannot detect a genuine, potentially dangerous food allergy or celiac disease, so it can give false reassurance too.

The clearly unscientific ones

A step below the IgG tests are two types that lack even a plausible mechanism.

Cytotoxic and hair tests: avoid entirely

Cytotoxic tests such as the ALCAT test mix your white blood cells with food extracts and measure whether the cells change size, claiming that swelling signals a food reaction. The proposed mechanism is not established, and independent evaluations classify it as an unproven, unvalidated test.

Hair-based "bioresonance" tests such as 5Strands and Check My Body Health analyze a few strands of mailed-in hair against hundreds of foods. There are two fatal problems: bioresonance has no accepted scientific basis, and hair simply does not carry any immune or metabolic information about how you react to foods. Journalistic investigations, including a widely reported BBC test, have submitted hair from pets, or even non-hair samples, and still received detailed "intolerance" reports, which tells you what these results are really worth.

Leaky gut and zonulin tests

The last category is the blood test sold to diagnose a leaky gut, usually by measuring a protein called zonulin (as in some Cyrex and Vibrant panels). Increased intestinal permeability is a real phenomenon in certain conditions, but the consumer test for it does not hold up. In research benchmarking permeability markers against the gold-standard sugar-absorption test, blood zonulin did not correlate with actual permeability. Worse, separate work has found that the common commercial zonulin ELISA kits may not be measuring zonulin at all, cross-reacting with other proteins. The good news is that the reliable options are proven, and most cost little or nothing.

If you enjoy the data and can afford it, an at-home microbiome test can be a fun curiosity. Are at-home gut microbiome tests accurate?

They are real laboratory tests, but they are not clinically validated to tell you what to do. The gut microbiome is a genuine and important area of science, but there is no agreed scientific definition of a healthy or optimal microbiome to compare your results against, so labeling a bacterium as good or bad is largely interpretation. Results also shift day to day and can differ between companies and even between repeat samples of the same stool. No strong evidence shows that following a consumer test's personalized diet or supplement advice improves health more than standard advice, and most of these tests are built to sell you their own supplements. They can be interesting, but they are not a diagnosis.

Do IgG food sensitivity tests actually work?

No, not for diagnosing food sensitivities or intolerances. Allergy organizations, including the American and European allergy academies, specifically advise against food-specific IgG and IgG4 testing. The reason is that IgG antibodies to foods are a normal sign that you have eaten and tolerate a food, not a sign of a problem, so a healthy person will light up positive for many everyday foods. Acting on those results leads to unnecessary and sometimes harmful food restriction, and the test cannot detect a true food allergy or celiac disease. Why do allergists advise against food sensitivity tests?

A food allergy is an immune reaction, usually driven by IgE antibodies, that can be rapid and serious, even life-threatening, and it is diagnosed by an allergist using your history, IgE testing, and sometimes a supervised oral food challenge. A food intolerance is a non-immune difficulty digesting or handling a food, such as lactose intolerance, that causes uncomfortable but not dangerous symptoms and is best identified with an elimination and reintroduction approach. The at-home IgG sensitivity tests measure neither of these reliably, which is a big part of why they cause confusion.

The bottom line

At-home gut and food tests sell certainty, and certainty is exactly what the science cannot yet deliver for most of them. Consumer microbiome tests are real technology attached to unproven advice, IgG food sensitivity tests are advised against by the people who actually diagnose food reactions, cytotoxic and hair tests are pseudoscience, and the zonulin leaky gut test does not measure what it claims. The frustrating truth is that the trustworthy answers still come from an allergist, a dietitian, a doctor, and an elimination diet, not from a barcode and a subscription. Save your money for those, feed your microbiome with fiber and plants, and be most skeptical of any test whose results come bundled with the seller's own supplements.
